IAEA chief to visit Kaliningrad for talks on occupied nuclear plant

Apr 04, 2023

Vienna [Austria], April 4: The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency plans to resume negotiations with Russia on Wednesday over the safety of the occupied Ukrainian nuclear power plant in Zaporizhzhya. IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi will meet with a Russian delegation in the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad on Wednesday, according to an IAEA spokesman. Russia's ambassador to the IAEA in Vienna, Mikhail Ulyanov, also confirmed plans for the meeting to Russia state TV channel Rossiya-24 on Monday. Last week, Grossi visited the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant - which remains under the control of Russian troops - for the second time since the war began.
Grossi warned that the escalating fighting in the region is putting Europe's largest nuclear power plant at serious risk.
During his visit, Grossi also made it clear that he has given up on a proposal to establish a security zone around the power plant. Instead, Grossi said he's seeking an agreement from both Russia and Ukraine that the plant may neither be shelled nor used as a base for launching attacks. (DPA)
