Kakhovka dam destruction causes 2 bln USD in direct damage to Ukraine: study

Kyiv [Ukraine], July 1: The destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant and its dam has caused direct damage of at least 2 billion U.S. dollars to the Ukrainian economy, according to a study published Friday by the Kyiv School of Economics (KSE) and government agencies.
"The tragedy has resulted in significant damage to the residential and communal sectors, as well as the energy sector," the KSE said in a statement.
The study put the economic damage of the incident to the housing and utilities sector at 960 million dollars, while the losses of the energy sector were estimated at 624 million dollars.
The damage inflicted on transport infrastructure accounted for 311 million dollars, the study said.
The Kakhovka incident has caused 25 million dollars in direct damage to agriculture and significant indirect damage due to the loss of the irrigation system in the region, it said.
The study was conducted by the analytical division of the KSE in cooperation with Ukraine's presidential office, the Economy Ministry, and the Ministry for Communities, Territories and Infrastructure Development.
The Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant dam was destroyed on June 6, with Ukraine and Russia trading accusations over the attack on it.
