Mexico City [Mexico], February 24: Mexican authorities found 101 Guatemalan migrants, including 11 unaccompanied minors, in an abandoned house in the northwestern Mexican state of Sonora, the National Institute of Migration (INM) reported on Friday.
"The minors and families were placed under the protection of the National System for Integral Family Development, while the adults were transferred to INM facilities," the government agency said.
In addition to the unaccompanied minors, there were 12 families consisting of 27 people and another 63 adults who could not prove their legal stay in Mexican territory, it said.
In recent years, the Central American region has faced a significant migration crisis. Mexico -- a common transit route for migrants of different nationalities seeking to reach the United States -- has been one of the most affected countries.
