Brazil opposition lawmakers end Bolsonaro protest

Rio de Janeiro [Brazil], August 8: Opposition lawmakers in Brazil have ended their occupation of the country's parliament in Brasilia after two days of protest over former president Jair Bolsonaro's house arrest.
Opposition leader Rogerio Marinho said he was ending the protest in the Senate "so that work can continue as normal," with the occupation of the Chamber of Deputies having already concluded the previous day.
The occupation in the Chamber of Deputies had already ended the previous evening.
The move came after Brazil's Supreme Court on Thursday imposed house arrest on Bolsonaro for violating restraining orders.
The opposition lawmakers also wanted to call for legislative projects, including a motion to impeach federal judge Alexandre de Moraes, who is hated by the political right, and an amnesty for those involved in the storming of government buildings in January 2023.
During the withdrawal, Marinho handed over a letter with 41 signatures calling on the president of the Senate to consider the removal of Moraes. However, the procedure is considered to have little chance of success as it requires the approval of the president of the Senate and a two-thirds majority - at least 54 out of 81 votes.
Bolsonaro is under investigation for his role in an attempted coup d'etat following his election defeat in 2022.
