Cameroon minister pledges security in restive Anglophone regions ahead of election

Yaounde [Cameroon], October 4: Cameroonian Minister of Territorial Administration Paul Atanga Nji on Friday assured that security forces have heightened security measures to ensure a hitch-free presidential election in the country's war-torn English-speaking regions of Northwest and Southwest.
Separatists seeking to create an independent nation in the regions have imposed a lockdown since September, threatening to disrupt the poll.
"We will not tolerate any disorder. The process will be free and fair and will be carried out in a secured environment," Nji told reporters during a security meeting in Bamenda, the chief town of the Northwest Region.
"Peace, security and tranquility should be assured and maintained before, during and after the election. The administrative authorities should ensure that the laws are respected," he added.
Officials said additional troops have been deployed to the regions and are conducting day and night patrols.
The presidential election is scheduled to take place in the Central African nation on Oct. 12.
