Could the mysterious 6,000-year-old underwater city rewrite human history?
Jul 31, 2025
Washington [US], July 31: A team of explorers claim to have found an ancient underwater city that could rewrite human history, but the ruins have somehow been ignored for the past 25 years.
In 2001, marine engineer Paulina Zelitsky and her husband Paul Weinzweig, owners of a Canadian company called Advanced Digital Communications (ADC), revealed that they had accidentally discovered a group of rock structures at a depth of more than 610 m off the coast of the Guanahacabibes peninsula in the Pinar del Río province of Cuba .
Using sonar technology to scan the seabed, they obtained images that showed the presence of what appeared to be pyramids , circular stone structures, as well as structures believed to belong to a lost ancient city in the Caribbean.
"It was a wonderful structure, looking like a large urban center from the outside," Daily Mail quoted Ms. Zelitsky as saying after discovering it 25 years ago on July 31.
Some hypotheses from researchers suggest that this mysterious city may have existed for more than 6,000 years, which if true would be much older than the pyramids in Egypt.
If confirmed, the existence of the ancient citadel off the coast of Cuba could lead to a rewriting of the history of human development.
However, an even bigger mystery has been revealed thanks to social media users after this discovery: For more than two decades, no one has returned to examine the underwater ruins off the coast of Cuba.
Mystery 'unearthed' on social networks
Recently, the forgotten structures suddenly reappeared on social media, with many people believing that the ancient expedition team may have found the ruins of the legendary city of Atlantis that disappeared into history.
Someone even put forward a hypothesis on social network X: "Perhaps there were civilizations that existed before the ice age, and perhaps many civilizations flourished before collapsing."
According to another, "there is so much hidden history. It's fascinating to discover it."
Despite the conspiracy theories, scientists argue that there are concrete reasons to doubt that the "lost city" is real.
According to one analysis, the structure lies at a depth far beyond imagination, and it took thousands of years for the area to sink more than 600 m due to the shifting of tectonic plates.
If there really was a city that took some 50,000 years to sink to that depth, its existence would completely change our understanding of human evolutionary history.
Scientists currently agree that modern humans (Homo sapiens) stopped at the level of hunter-gatherers about 50,000 years ago, and there is no archaeological evidence showing that prehistoric humans had enough energy to build complex societies and construction systems.
And of course, the possibility of alien intervention cannot be ruled out.
