Cuba paralysed once again by total electricity blackout: State generator

Jul 07, 2026

Mexico City [Mexico], July 7: The Cuban electricity grid has gone down across the Caribbean island, state electricity generator UNE reported on X on Monday.
The brief statement said only that the disconnection was total and that the cause was being investigated.
Cuba is in the midst of a severe economic and energy crisis, with daily power cuts, sometimes lasting for hours. The socialist government blames the crisis on sanctions imposed by the United States. US President Donald Trump has imposed an oil embargo on Cuba, and Washington is using a range of measures to pressure the country into opening up economically and politically in line with US ideas.
Crucial supplies of Venezuelan oil to the island were cut off after US forces seized president Nicolas Maduro in January and took him to New York to face trial on drugs charges. Vice President Delcy Rodríguez has taken over in his absence.
The Cuban electricity grid has been struggling for years, owing to a lack of investment. Large parts of the network are in poor condition, with power stations repeatedly breaking down and then undergoing makeshift repairs.
