Dani Alves leaves Sao Paulo over pay dispute

Sep 11, 2021

Sao Paulo (Brazil), September 11: Veteran defender Dani Alves has parted ways with Sao Paulo because of unpaid wages, the Brazilian club said on Friday.
In a statement published on social media, Sao Paulo said the 38-year-old had refused to return to training after playing in Brazil's 2-0 win over Peru in a World Cup qualifier on Thursday.
"We were told by his agent that Daniel will not come back until there is an adjustment in the financial debt that Sao Paulo has with the player," Sao Paulo football director Carlos Belmonte said.
"Sao Paulo recognizes that debt and last week we made a proposal to try and right it. The proposal was not accepted by the player's representatives. Negotiations will continue. We have taken the decision ... that Dani Alves will no longer be at the disposal of coach Hernan Crespo to play for Sao Paulo."
According to local media reports, Sao Paulo owe Alves more than two million US dollars.
The right-back signed with the Brazilian Serie A club in August 2019 after a 17-year career in Europe that included spells with Sevilla, Barcelona, Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain.
