Danish PM resigns after failing to secure majority

Mar 26, 2026

Stockholm [Sweden], March 26: Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen tendered the government's resignation on Wednesday, paving the way for the formation of a new one that she is hoping to lead following Tuesday' elections.
Frederiksen offered the resignation to King Frederik X, the Royal House said in a statement, in a formal step a day after her Social Democrats emerged as the strongest party in Denmark's general election.
Nonetheless, with some 22% of the vote, their result was historically poor after 27.6% in 2022.
While Frederiksen's party remains the largest force following the vote, it is unclear whether she will get a mandate to form a new government.
Once the outgoing government resigns, in Danish tradition, the king receives the leaders of all 12 parliamentary parties one after the other at the palace for what is known as the "King's Round." The leaders inform Frederik X whom they support as the future head of government or leader of the coalition talks. Based on this, the king decides who may be the first to try and form a coalition that does not face a majority opposition.
It will be the first time Frederik X holds a King's Round since his accession to the throne in January 2024.
