Mexico City [Mexico], September 12: Six people have died in hospitals from their injuries and around 20 are still in a critical condition following the explosion of a tanker filled with liquid gas in Mexico City, officials said on Thursday.
The authorities also raised the official number of people injured to around 90, the head of the local civil defence, Myriam UrzĂșa, told local radio.
The truck, which had a capacity of 49,500 litres, overturned under a motorway overpass before exploding, according to the mayor of the Mexican capital, Clara Brugada.
The accident caused a shock wave, Brugada said. At least 18 vehicles caught fire after the explosion.
President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her regret over the accident in the eastern neighbourhood of Santa Martha Acatitla, in the densely populated district of Iztapalapa.
"Our sympathies go out to all the relatives who have lost a loved one," Sheinbaum said at her daily press conference. (DPA)
