Egypt reaffirms support for Palestinian cause

Cairo (Egypt), September 7: Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi met on Tuesday with visiting Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Cairo over the latest developments of the decades-long Israeli-Palestinian conflict, said the Egyptian presidency in a statement.
Sisi stressed the importance of uniting all efforts to support the Palestinian position and maintain calm, especially in the Gaza Strip, according to the statement.
"Egypt will continue to provide all possible support to the Palestinian issue to guarantee the realization of the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people on the basis of the principle of the two-state solution, and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital," the Egyptian president said.
For his part, Abbas expressed his appreciation for Egypt's tireless efforts in support of the Palestinian issue and its historical role and unwavering position in order to reach a just and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
The Palestinian president hailed the "special" Egyptian-Palestinian relations, expressing his keenness to continue consultation and coordination with his Egyptian counterpart on the overall Palestinian situation.
The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been going on for decades, following the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories and the Western-backed creation of Israel in 1948.
Egypt has always been a key mediator in the conflict.
Cairo brokered several truces between Palestinian armed groups and Israeli forces, the latest of which was in August when Egypt mediated a cease-fire between the Palestinian Islamic Jihad in Gaza and Israel.
