Egypt sets November 1 for long-awaited museum's inauguration

Aug 07, 2025

Cairo [Egypt], August 7: Egypt will officially inaugurate its long-awaited museum near the Pyramids on November 1, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli said on Wednesday, after the war that erupted between Israel and Iran led authorities to cancel a July ceremony. The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), deemed the world's largest museum of the ancient Egyptian civilization, showcases thousands of artefacts including the Tutankhamun collection, discovered in 1922. While it has been open for visitors since last year, the official inauguration comes nearly a decade after it was originally planned. World leaders and prominent figures are scheduled to be invited to the celebration. The foundation stone of the museum was laid in 2002 near the Pyramids and the Sphinx.
Official inauguration has been postponed many times, after it was initially to be opened in 2015. The event was scheduled to take place on July 3, but was postponed after Israel waged a 12-day war against Iran, bombing key nuclear facilities in cooperation with the United States.
