Europe seeks solutions for peace in Ukraine

Kyiv [Ukraine], October 20: European leaders are said to be discussing new proposals to resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Among them, the plan proposed by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on October 18 is to coordinate with the US to draft a peace plan in Ukraine , similar to the 20-point agreement framework proposed by US President Donald Trump to end the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
The information appeared after a bilateral meeting between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. According to The Kyiv Independent on October 18, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that Mr. Zelensky's visit to the US did not go as expected from the Ukrainian leader, when President Trump was still hesitant to provide tomahawk cruise missiles to Kyiv. Mr. Merz said that what Ukraine needed now was a peace plan and the EU would coordinate the implementation of the next directions.
After meeting with Mr. Trump, President Zelensky had a phone call with a number of European leaders. During the call, the British Prime Minister called for the Gaza peace plan to be applied to the situation in Ukraine. President of the European Council Antonio Costa also emphasized the common goal of the European Union (EU) is to ensure a just and lasting peace for Ukraine.
This week, the EU will hold a series of high-level meetings, including a summit of the bloc on October 23. Reuters reported that EU foreign ministers will meet on October 20 with the hope of completing the 19th package of sanctions against Russia, related to Moscow's military campaign in Ukraine. Slovakia is currently concerned about the new sanctions and EU leaders need to lobby to resolve Slovakia's problems, as the sanctions require the approval of all EU members. Meanwhile, TASS news agency on October 19 quoted Mr. Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia's permanent representative to international organizations in Vienna (Austria), saying that the EU and NATO want the war in Ukraine to prolong.
