Feeding a million people in Gaza every month: WFP

Apr 07, 2024

Gaza [Palestine], April 7: As the war approaches its six-month mark, the World Food Programme is providing meals to more than a million Palestinians each month in a desperate bid to prevent famine in Gaza, the WFP has said in a statement.
"Malnutrition among children is spreading at a record pace, and one of three children below the age of two is now acutely malnourished," the statement said. According to the WFP, famine is especially closing in on the north of Gaza, where "there is reasonable evidence that all three famine thresholds (food insecurity, malnutrition, and mortality) will be passed in the next two months".
Following the killing of seven aid workers from the World Central Kitchen in an Israeli air strike in Gaza, security remains a big concern.
Meanwhile, UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell has said the war on Gaza has killed more than "13,000 children" and injured "countless" others during intense Israeli attacks on the enclave.
"Homes, schools and hospitals in ruin. Teachers, doctors and humanitarians killed. Famine is imminent. The level and speed of destruction are shocking. Children need a ceasefire NOW," Russell wrote on X.
