Hamas agrees to US ceasefire proposal

Sep 12, 2024

Tel Aviv [Israel], September 12: Hamas said it was ready to implement an immediate ceasefire with Israel in the Gaza Strip based on the initial US proposal and that neither side had set new conditions.
Hamas negotiators met with other parties in Doha, Qatar, on September 11 to discuss the latest developments in the Gaza Strip. According to AFP, Hamas was represented by Khalil al-Hayya, while the other two participants were Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani and Egyptian intelligence chief Abbas Kamel.
Hamas later issued a statement emphasizing its readiness to immediately implement the ceasefire agreement based on the statement of US President Joe Biden.
Biden presented the framework in May and continued to propose in August to meet the demands of the parties. The US leader's proposal was divided into three stages of ceasefire, in exchange for the release of hostages and prisoners.
The proposal is a basis for negotiations but has so far failed to produce a final agreement to end the 11-month conflict. Pressure has mounted after six hostages were found dead in a Gaza tunnel earlier this month.
However, in the face of calls for compromise, both Israel and Hamas have remained steadfast in their stance on negotiations. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stressed the need to control the Gaza Strip's border with Egypt, known as the Philadelphia corridor, saying it is necessary to prevent Hamas from receiving weapons from across the border.
Egypt and Qatar have denied allegations that the border area is being used to supply weapons to Hamas, accusing Netanyahu of deliberately misleading Israeli public opinion and obstructing the deal.
In a statement on September 11, Hamas demanded that Israel withdraw its troops from the entire Gaza territory. Hamas stressed that it had no other demands and also opposed other parties doing the same.
