Heavy fighting between Ukrainian and Russian armies in Kursk

Feb 17, 2025

Kiev [Ukraine], February 17: Russian and Ukrainian troops again engaged in heavy fighting in the western Russian region of Kursk, the Ukrainian General Staff said on Sunday.
The staff reported several Russian attacks supported by artillery, without providing details of specific locations. Ukrainian forces made new territorial gains near Kursk a few days ago in surprise advances.
The Ukrainian Magura brigade fighting near Kursk reported a strong counter-attack by a Russian naval infantry unit.
Ukrainian media quoted the combat report as saying that "a convoy of more than a dozen tanks and about a company of enemies - the 'elite' Russian 155th Marine Brigade flying 'victory' flags were thrown into the assault."
However, the Russian unit entered a minefield and was attacked by a swarm of drones hitting vehicles and troops, the reports said. The online edition of Ukrainska Pravda published a video purportedly showing hits on several tanks in a snowy field. The report and video could not be independently verified.
Ukrainian forces advanced across the border into Russian territory last summer and occupied parts of the western Russian region of Kursk. Ever since, Russian units have been trying to recapture the area.
