Iraq parliament fails again in bid to elect president

Cairo [Egypt], February 2: Iraq's parliament on Sunday failed in its second attempt to choose the country's new president amid disagreements over picking a single candidate for the post.
The parliament postponed its session to elect the president until further notice, sources in the legislature's media office said without providing further details.
Just a few days ago, another session to elect the president was postponed due to disagreements among the Kurdish blocs in parliament over their candidate.
By custom, a Kurdish politician serves as Iraq's president, a largely ceremonial post. The post of parliament speaker is traditionally occupied by a Sunni Muslim, and the prime minister is a Shiite Muslim.
Sunday's session was postponed due to a lack of quorum after the failure of the Kurdish blocs to agree on a joint candidate to nominate to the presidential post.
Prime Minister of Iraq's autonomous region of Kurdistan, Masrour Barzani, said on Sunday in press remarks that no agreement had been yet reached on the presidential post.
