Israeli officer killed in West Bank clashes: army

May 14, 2022

Jerusalem [Israel], May 14: An Israeli police officer died from injuries in clashes with Palestinian militants in northern West Bank on Friday.
The Israeli military said in a statement that the 47-year-old member of the police special forces unit was injured in a joint police and military operation in the West Bank village of Burkin to arrest "individuals suspected of involvement in terrorist activity."
Clashes erupted between the forces and Palestinians due to the raid. Palestinian medics said 13 Palestinian were also injured in the clashes.
Israeli military and police forces have been operating in the northern West Bank in recent weeks in response to a wave of attacks against Israelis carried out by militants from the area.
Tensions have been running high as violence between the sides continues. Last month the Israeli military announced it would be increasing its presence in the West Bank.
A further uptick in friction came this week after the shooting to death of Al-Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh in Jenin on Wednesday.
