Kamala Harris will not run for governor of California
Jul 31, 2025
Washington [US], July 31: Former US Vice President Kamala Harris has announced that she will not run for governor of California, continuing speculation about her upcoming political career.
In a statement on July 30, Ms. Harris said: "Over the past months, I have given serious thought to asking the people of California to give me the honor of serving as governor. I love this state, its people, and its promise. This is my home. However, after careful consideration, I have decided not to seek governor in this election."
According to people close to the former vice president, the decision will help Ms. Harris if she intends to run for the White House in 2028. NBC News said that although running for governor does not theoretically prevent her from running to become the US president in 2028, a person close to Ms. Harris said that she is considering many factors and implications if she runs.
California will hold a gubernatorial election next year, when Governor Gavin Newsom finishes his second term and cannot run again due to term limits. Several candidates have already announced their candidacies for the state's governorship.
There has been much public speculation over the past few months about Ms. Harris's political career, following her defeat to President Donald Trump in the 2024 White House race. According to AP, Ms. Harris has considered running for governor, running for US president, or leaving politics.
"I look forward to returning and listening to the American people, helping elect Democrats across the country who will fight fearlessly, and sharing more details about my own plans in the months ahead," she said on July 30.
Kamala Harris served as California attorney general, then a senator, and then became the first female vice president in US history, working under former President Joe Biden . Observers believe that with the above profile, Harris will have many advantages if she runs for governor of California. However, the decision not to participate in the gubernatorial race continues to open up questions about Harris' upcoming career.
According to a source close to her, in the near future, Ms. Harris will consider non-profit work, or possibly work on a political action committee (PAC). She will also campaign for Democrats in next year's midterm elections, according to NBC News.
Another source said Ms. Harris wants to engage in national discussions and talk about President Donald Trump, something that a job limited to the state level would be difficult to do.
