Lebanon summons Iranian envoy

Apr 25, 2025

Beirut [Lebanon], April 25: The Lebanese Foreign Ministry on Thursday summoned the Iranian ambassador following remarks that were widely seen as interference in the country's domestic affairs, particularly surrounding the sensitive issue of the Hezobllah militia's weapons.
The ministry's secretary general met with Ambassador Mojtaba Amani to stress the "necessity of adhering to the diplomatic principles set forth in international agreements regarding the sovereignty of states and non-interference in their internal affairs." The summons followed a series of comments by Amani, including a social media post warning that "disarmament projects" were part of a conspiracy aimed at weakening nations.
He wrote that while the US continues to arm Israel, it pressures other countries to disarm, referencing Iraq, Libya, and Syria as examples.
The Iranian Embassy clarified in a statement following the meeting that the ambassador's comments were general, and not directed specifically at Lebanon. (DPA)
