Mexican president hits back at Trump with 'Mexican America' jibe

Jan 09, 2025

Mexico City [Mexico], January 9: Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has suggested renaming the southern United States "Mexican America" in response to US President-elect Donald Trump's proposal to change the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.
Sheinbaum made the joke at her daily press conference on Wednesday, referencing how the name appeared on world maps in the 17th century.
She remarked: "Why don't we call it Mexican America? Sounds good, doesn't it?" The previous day, Trump had described his Gulf of America proposal as having "a beautiful ring." Until the Mexican-American War in the 19th century, current US states such as California, Arizona and Texas were part of Mexico. The name Gulf of Mexico for the body of water off the southern coast of the US and eastern coast of Mexico has been in use since the 16th century.
Left-wing politician and climate expert Sheinbaum became Mexico's first female president in October. (DPA)
