Mexican President Sheinbaum calls for peaceful solution to US-Cuba tensions

Mar 25, 2026

Mexico City [Mexico], March 25: Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Monday reiterated her support for Cuba's right to self-determination amid heightened tensions between Havana and Washington.
"We will continue to send all the humanitarian aid that is needed," Sheinbaum said during her daily press conference, adding that Mexico would "always assert the Cuban people's right to self-determination." The Mexican leader called for a multilateral approach to be used to resolve any kind of conflict. "No to invasions, no to violent solutions," she said.
Sheinbaum also repeated her criticism of restrictions on fuel supplies to the island caused by the US embargo.
Relations between Havana and Washington have been strained since the 1959 revolution led by the left-wing revolutionary Fidel Castro. The situation has further deteriorated during US President Donald Trump's second term.
The US oil embargo has deepened Cuba's economic and humanitarian crisis, which has also been driven by years of mismanagement and corruption. The country suffered its second nationwide power outage in a week on Saturday. (DPA)
