Mexico boss Martino to miss WC qualifiers after eye surgery

Sep 04, 2021

Mexico (North America), September 4: Mexico head coach Gerardo Martino will miss his team's next two World Cup qualifiers after undergoing eye surgery, the country's football federation said on Friday.
The 58-year-old Argentine underwent a procedure to repair a detached retina in his right eye and has been advised to rest at home, the federation said in a statement.
"The operation was conducted in a timely manner ... to avoid the risk of losing his good vision," the statement read.
The surgery came less than a day after Mexico began their quest to qualify for next year's World Cup in Qatar with a 2-1 home win over Jamaica.
Assistant coach Jorge Theiler will be in charge for the Tri's qualifiers against Costa Rica on Sunday and Panama on Wednesday.
