Militants target diplomats with a bomb amid surge in attacks in Pakistan

Islamabad [Pakistan], September 23: A group of diplomats travelling in north-western Pakistan was targeted with a remote-controlled bomb, killing a policeman escorting the group, officials said on Sunday.
The incident took place in the Swat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa amid an uptick in militant attacks in the country.
Four people were wounded in the explosion, but "all members of the diplomatic corps have returned safely to Islamabad," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement. District police told media that the explosion was caused by a remote-controlled improvised explosive device (IED). The diplomats were travelling to take part in a summit organized by the Chamber of Commerce & Industry to promote tourism, handicrafts and gemstones. Diplomats from Russia, Vietnam, Kazakhstan, Indonesia, Ethiopia, Iran, Turkmenistan, Zimbabwe, Tajikistan, Portugal, Bosnia and Rwanda were part of the group. (DPA)
