Jan 18, 2024

Washington [US], January 18: After his victory in Iowa, former US President Donald Trump attended a civil trial in New York City (New York state) related to charges of defamation against former journalist Elizabeth Jean Carroll in 2019, after she denounced he raped me many years ago.
According to AFP, at the trial on January 16 (local time), the former president sat at the defendant's table and listened to Ms. Carroll's lawyer Shawn Crowley present to the jury. Attorney Crowley said that Mr. Trump in 2019 made Ms. Carroll's life miserable when she publicly announced that he sexually assaulted her in the dressing room of a shopping mall in Manhattan (New York City, New York). York) circa 1996.
Ms. Carroll asked Mr. Trump to compensate for at least $10 million in losses. Previously at the trial on May 9, 2023, the jury concluded that the former president must pay $5 million in compensation for sexually abusing and then defaming Ms. Carroll. At this trial, Mr. Trump wants to continue arguing, but the jury will only consider the amount of money Mr. Trump must compensate Ms. Carroll, not whether the above behavior occurred or not. Mr. Trump's lawyer Alina Habba said that Ms. Carroll sought to attract attention after releasing her memoir and accused Mr. Trump of raping her.
After leaving court, Mr. Trump went to New Hampshire, where the Republican Party will hold a primary election on January 23, to campaign the same evening and said he would still attend the "sham" trial in next few days. "This morning I went to a witch hunt. Then I came here, we made speeches and won votes," he told supporters in the town of Atkinson. He said he had to return to compete with President Joe Biden and defeat the Democrats, as well as "not waste much time" on his two Republican election opponents, the former US Ambassador to the United Nations. Nikki Haley and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
Meanwhile, the Democratic Party will focus on starting the process of electing candidates in the states of South Carolina, Nevada and other populous, ethnically diverse states, which they believe will better reflect the country.
