North Korea conducts eighth ballistic missile test of year

May 27, 2026

Seoul [South Korea], May 27: North Korea fired several short-range missiles and other unidentified objects on Tuesday, South Korea's military said, in what would mark Pyongyang's eighth ballistic missile test this year.
The missiles were launched from the area around the city of Chongju and flew about 80 kilometres into the sea, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said.
Seoul said it would maintain a "full readiness posture" amid the possibility of further missile launches by North Korea.
North Korea last fired several short-range missiles on April 19. The country is prohibited from launching ballistic missiles under multiple United Nations Security Council resolutions.
Earlier, South Korea's Yonhap news agency, citing government officials, reported that Chinese President Xi Jinping could meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Pyongyang later this month. The reported state visit has not been officially confirmed, however.
