Romania's ruling coalition agrees to hold presidential election on May 4

Jan 09, 2025

Bucharest [Romania], January 9: Romania's ruling coalition has agreed to have the first round of the presidential elections on May 4, 2025, with a potential runoff set for May 18.
The National Liberal Party (PNL) announced following a coalition meeting on Wednesday that Crin Antonescu will remain the coalition's official presidential candidate.
The decision aligns the first round with partial local elections in regions including Busteni, Zalau, and Bihor County, while avoiding overlap with Easter and Palm Sunday celebrations.
The government is expected to formalize the election schedule next week through official legal documents.
Last Saturday, Antonescu voiced frustration over the coalition's indecision, telling local media outlet Digi 24 that the agreement supporting his candidacy was "suspended." However, he signaled his continued openness to running.
