Rumors of Iran supplying missiles to Russia, US warns, Tehran speaks out

Sep 07, 2024

Washington DC [US], September 7: The Wall Street Journal also cited several sources confirming that Washington had informed its allies about Iran 's move in the past few days. The exact type of missiles and quantity transferred by Iran to Russia were not specified, according to The Wall Street Journal .
Last month, Reuters reported that Russia was expecting to receive hundreds of Fath-360 short-range ballistic missiles from Iran and that dozens of Russian servicemen were being trained in Iran on the satellite-guided weapon for use in the conflict in Ukraine.
A US official told Reuters on September 6 that they were closely monitoring potential missile transfers between Iran and Russia.
US National Security Council spokesman Sean Savett warned on September 6 that any transfer of ballistic missiles from Iran to Russia would mark a sharp escalation in the Russia- Ukraine conflict , after reports that the two countries have deepened their relationship in recent weeks through arms transfers, according to Reuters.
"We have been alerted to the deepening security partnership between Russia and Iran since the beginning of Russia's [military campaign] in Ukraine and are deeply concerned by these reports. Any transfer of ballistic missiles from Iran to Russia would represent a significant escalation in Iran's support for Russia's war against Ukraine," Mr Savett warned.
Meanwhile, the Iranian delegation to the United Nations in New York (USA) on September 6 announced that Tehran's stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict remains unchanged, according to Reuters.
"Iran considers the provision of military support to the parties involved in the conflict, which results in increased human casualties, destruction of infrastructure and derailment of ceasefire negotiations, to be inhumane. Therefore, Iran not only refrains from engaging in such actions but also calls on other countries to stop supplying weapons to the parties involved in the conflict," the Iranian delegation stressed.
