Rwanda confirms talks with United States on agreement to accept migrants

Kigali [Rwanda], May 6: Rwanda and the United States are holding talks on an agreement to accept rejected asylum seekers from the US, according the East African country's top diplomat.
"These talks with the United States are ongoing and it is still too early to predict their exact course - but they are indeed taking place," Foreign Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe said on Rwandan television on Monday.
He noted that such negotiations were nothing new for Rwanda. The country previously concluded an agreement with Britain under which Rwanda would take in rejected refugees in return for substantial payments.
However, the controversial plan of the then Conservative government in London was not implemented.
Following the change of government in Britain, Prime Minister Keir Starmer stopped the asylum pact last year, a few months after it passed through parliament. (DPA)
