Snow, ice cause chaos in Europe as millions return to work

London [UK], January 6: Snow, rain and freezing temperatures brought chaotic conditions to many European countries on Monday as people returned to work after the holiday break.
Around 450 flights were cancelled at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport, and train services in the Dutch capital and the Utrecht region were suspended, operators announced. There were also numerous delays to rail services in Poland.
In the Czech Republic, minus 30.6 degrees Celsius was recorded in the Bohemian Forest on the border with south-eastern Germany.
Numerous accidents occurred on slippery roads, especially in the low mountain regions.
In Scotland, hundreds of schools remained closed in the morning due to adverse conditions, and a severe weather warning was in place in many parts of Britain due to heavy snowfall.
Local disruptions were also reported in France and heavy snow fell in the Balkans, particularly in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Romania.
In the Carpathian region of Transylvania, several villages were isolated due to snow-covered access roads.
In Sweden, flight cancellations also occurred at Stockholm Airport, with new snowfall forecast for the evening.
In Austria, state meteorologists issued a cold weather warning for the west of the country, with temperatures likely to drop to as low as minus 17 degrees Celsius on Tuesday.
