The Pentagon Begins Using Billionaire Elon Musk's AI Grok

Jul 15, 2025

Washington [US], July 15: The US Department of Defense will begin using the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot Grok developed by billionaire Elon Musk's xAI Company.
Writing on social network X, Mr. Musk announced the "Grok for Government" program, an AI toolkit designed to be applied to the work of federal agencies, local governments and national security operations.
The deal between the Pentagon and xAI is part of a $200 million contract that details tools to increase the application of AI in health care, basic science and national security, according to Politico.
The move represents an effort by the Trump administration to apply artificial intelligence more widely in government. Since taking office, Trump has viewed AI as a pillar of national security and innovation, CBS News reported. Despite recent disagreements between Trump and billionaire Elon Musk , xAI is expanding its operations in the US government.
Grok was introduced in late 2023 and integrated into the social network X, amid the rapid development of AI chatbot tools. The US government can now purchase the latest version, Grok 4, which was launched on July 9.
However, this chatbot has recently been embroiled in controversy when it responded to what were considered anti-Semitic and extremist messages. The company xAI has issued an apology and corrected the issue. The newly launched version of Grok has also been questioned about the way it responds to users, when the AP reported on July 12 that this AI chatbot sought Elon Musk's opinion before responding to an issue.
