The Prime Minister of South Korea resigned

Apr 11, 2024

Seoul [South Korea], April 11: On April 11, South Korean Prime Minister Han Duck-soo expressed his intention to resign after the ruling People's Power Party (PPP) failed in the April 10 parliamentary election.
" Prime Minister Han expressed his intention to resign," Yonhap quoted an official from President Yoon Suk Yeol's office as telling the press. The official added that a series of other senior Seoul government officials also plan to resign following the defeat of the ruling PPP party in the parliamentary election .
On the same day, Reuters reported that the Democratic Party (DP) is expected to hold more than 170 out of 300 seats in the new parliament, according to data from the National Election Commission and Korean television stations with more than 99% of the seats. Votes were counted until 5:55 a.m. on April 11 (local time).
Meanwhile, President Yoon's ruling party won just over 100 seats according to surveys.
The above number means that the leader can avoid a situation where the opposition controls the parliament with a 2/3 majority. In a situation where the opposition controls parliament, the president's veto power will be paralyzed, paving the way for the passage of constitutional amendments.
Some analysts see this fierce race as a referendum on Mr. Yoon, in a context where support for him has wavered due to the cost of living crisis and a series of political scandals.
In another development, First Lady Kim Keon Hee has not appeared in public since December 15 last year and was absent when Mr. Yoon voted on April 10.
