Jan 13, 2025

Riga [Latvia], January 13: Tens of thousands of people in Estonia have been cut off from the power supply due to heavy snowfall and snowstorms. According to the national utility company, more than 17,000 households were temporarily without electricity over the weekend.
The region around the second-largest city, Tartu, was the hardest hit, but residents in other parts of the Baltic EU country were also without power. Road and rail traffic was disrupted and cancelled due to snow and black ice. Snowploughs were in constant use, and emergency services were called out more than 300 times over the weekend - mostly to remove trees that had fallen on roads or power lines due to the heavy snow.
In addition, there were dozens of traffic accidents and several fires caused by heating systems. The heavy snowfall and snowstorms began on Friday morning and continued over the weekend. Meteorologist predict that they should ease up early next week.
