Paris [France], October 5: Two people have been shot dead and five others injured, some seriously, in the southern French coastal city of Nice, officials said on Saturday as the search continued for the perpetrators.
An investigation is under way on suspicion of premeditated murder by an organized gang, the authorities said.
The mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, said the shooting late on Friday evening was linked to drug crime and that automatic weapons had been used.
He called for a permanent increase in police presence in the affected neighbourhood.
Reinforcements were mobilized after the incident to ensure security at the location, a recognized problem area that is prone to violent crime, the prefecture said.
According to French media, the suspects were on the run and still being sought.
