Ukraine accuses Russia of attacking grain ships in the Black Sea

Oct 09, 2024

Kyiv [Ukraine], October 9: Ukrainian officials say a Russian missile hit a Palau-flagged grain ship in the southern Ukrainian port of Odessa on Oct. 7, Reuters reported. Ukraine said the ship had docked hours before the attack.
Odessa Governor Oleh Kiper said the attack killed one port worker and injured five foreign nationals who were crew members on the ship.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha condemned the attack on the cargo ship, stressing the need for Kyiv to cooperate with responsible countries and organizations to ensure freedom of navigation in the Black Sea and global food security. Ukrainian officials said another cargo ship carrying 6,000 tons of corn was attacked at the port of Pivdennyi, near the port of Odessa, on October 6. Moscow has not commented on Ukraine's statement. Russia has often denied attacking civilian targets .
