UN Security Council to meet after Estonia cites Russian violations

Sep 22, 2025

New York [US], September 22: The United Nations Security Council will convene an emergency meeting on Monday about reported Russian violations of Estonian airspace after the Baltic country made a request for the meeting - the first time it did so in 34 years of UN membership.
The meeting, to be held at 10am (1400 GMT) at UN headquarters in New York is "in response to Russia's brazen violation of Estonian airspace last Friday," the Estonian Foreign Ministry said in a statement published on Sunday.
Russia, which is a permanent member of the Security Council, can veto any resolutions. Moscow has denied the airspace violation.
"By openly violating our airspace, Russia is undermining principles that are essential to the security of all UN member states," Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna said in the statement. (DPA)
