Uncertainty in Croatia as election leaves conservatives short

Apr 19, 2024

Zagreb (Croatia), April 19: Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic's conservative HDZ party has fallen short of an absolute majority in Wednesday's elections, heralding a period of political uncertainty for the country.
The official results released on Thursday have led some analysts to forecast a shift to the right with coalition talks set to begin.
More than 60% of eligible voters cast ballots in the election, the highest turnout in Croatia since 2000.
Plenkovic on Thursday did not rule out a coalition with the right-wing nationalist Homeland Movement, which placed third in the polls.
"We will talk to those who are willing to talk," he told Croatian media while in Brussels for a summit of EU leaders. (DPA)
