UNHCR provides medical assistance to healthcare centers in Libya

Apr 18, 2024

Tripoli [Libya], April 18: The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has provided medical supplies to healthcare centers in Libya, aiding thousands amid the country's ongoing armed conflict and political instability.
The agency said on Wednesday that its initiative has delivered essential medical equipment and supplies to primary healthcare centers, particularly targeting clinics in regions densely populated by refugees. This includes areas with a significant number of recent Sudanese arrivals, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and members of the Libyan host community.
According to the UNHCR, three clinics in the capital Tripoli and Azzawiya have already received support, benefiting approximately 35,000 individuals where health services are notably insufficient. The provided supplies include hospital beds, wheelchairs, laboratory equipment, ultrasounds, and sterilizing machines.
The statement further detailed plans to extend aid to five additional clinics in eastern Libya, including in Benghazi, Shahat, and Alkufra. This expansion aims to reach Sudanese refugees and IDPs impacted by the recent floods in Derna, with an anticipated 67,000 people to receive this critical assistance.
Libya's healthcare and education systems have been severely affected by years of armed conflict and political instability, hindering the government's ability to deliver basic services to its population.
