Unrest hits Poland's ruling coalition

Jul 24, 2024

Warsaw [Poland], July 24: The narrow failure to liberalize Poland's strict abortion laws earlier this month is still provoking unrest in the ruling centrist coalition in Warsaw.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk on Tuesday dismissed Waldemar Slugocki, a member of parliament from his Civic Coalition party, as deputy minister for development and technology.
Slugocki and two other Civic Coalition lawmakers were either absent or abstained from the vote in the lower house in Warsaw on July 12.
The draft law, which would have decriminalised the act of aiding women in abortions, was rejected in a close 218 to 215 vote.
The MPs from Tusk's broad and unruly coalition who voted against the bill, or not at all, have been blamed for sinking the measure. In particular, many lawmakers from centre-right Third Way alliance, which is part of the government, rejected it. (DPA)
