US safety agency ends power steering probe into 376,000 Tesla EVs

Washington DC [US], June 29: US road-safety regulators have completed the investigation into loss of control in Tesla due to a power-steering assist issue, in light of the company's recall conducted last year.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said the investigation, which had previously been in engineering analysis status, encompassed about 376,241 2023 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles.
The investigation was opened in July 2023 after reports of loss of steering in the Tesla Model 3
and Model Y, following some owners reporting an inability to turn the wheel or increased steering effort required.
In early 2024 it was transitioned to engineering analysis for further investigation of a possible defect.
Tesla recalled 376,000 of its vehicles in the United States in early 2025 due to a failure of the power-steering assist system, which could complicate
handling, especially at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.
However, the company said the recall was not a response to the NHTSA investigation, which at that time remained open.
As part of the recall, Tesla said it had released a wireless software update designed to prevent overloading and overstressing drive components on the printed circuit board, which had caused increased steering effort.
In light of this, the regulator announced the closure of the engineering analysis.
