Venezuela released more than 80 political prisoners, says monitoring group

Jan 03, 2026

Caracas [Venezuela], January 3: The government of Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro has released 87 political prisoners, an independent monitoring group said on Thursday.
Most of those freed have been ordered to report to the police every 30 days, the Observatorio Venezolano de Prisiones said on X. "Criminal prosecution does not stop; the state merely changes the nature of the restriction of freedom," the observatory said. "We call on Nicolas Maduro's regime to grant complete freedom to all political prisoners."
It comes after dozens of political prisoners were released at Christmas. The government has long persecuted political opponents, with over 800 currently behind bars.
