US - China dialogue or confrontation at Shangri-La?

May 30, 2024

Washington [US], May 30: It is expected that at the Shangri-La Dialogue event taking place in Singapore from May 31 to June 2, the talks between US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and Chinese Defense Minister Dong Quan will become the focus of attention.
At the Shangri-La Dialogue held at the same time last year, Washington proposed a meeting between Secretary Austin and his Chinese counterpart at that time, Mr. Li Thuong Phuc. However, Beijing rejected Washington's proposal.
Since then, the two sides have continued to have many high-level meetings, including a summit between US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping at the end of last year. However, the two sides still have many deep disagreements related to the issues: East Sea, Taiwan Strait, Ukraine conflict... as well as the ongoing US-China trade conflict .
That's why this meeting on the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue between Mr. Austin and Mr. Dong attracted a lot of attention. On this occasion, in response to Thanh Nien , a number of international experts commented on the meeting.
