Without Ly Hai on the racetrack, how will the Vietnamese box office fare during the April 30th holiday?

May 05, 2026

Hanoi [Vietnam], May 5: The competitive landscape among the five Vietnamese films released during the recent April 30th holiday has sparked considerable curiosity among viewers.
During the recent April 30th holiday, the Vietnamese box office witnessed a competition between five Vietnamese films: *Phi Phong: The Blood Demon of the Sacred Forest*, *The Five-Toed Pig*, *Blood Moon Feast 8*, *The Shell King* , and *Hero* . This year, Ly Hai did not participate in the race. Therefore, the rivalry between these films has sparked considerable curiosity among audiences.
According to data from Box Office Vietnam , the Vietnamese box office generated 279.6 billion VND in revenue over 10 days (from April 24th to May 3rd) during the April 30th holiday this year. "Compared to the same period last year, with a similar timeframe (April 25th, 2025, when Detective Kien: The Headless Case was released) until the end of the holiday (May 4th, 2025), box office revenue reached 328 billion VND, 15% more than this year, and last year there wasn't even a Hung Kings' Commemoration Day holiday falling in the middle like this year," a representative from Box Office Vietnam stated.
However, representatives from Box Office Vietnam argue that if we are to truly count films released around April 30th, we need to add the sales figures from the previous 7 days for "Phi Phong: Blood Demon of the Sacred Forest" and the two films with special screenings on April 23rd. If this method is applied, the number would increase significantly, certainly surpassing the figures for the 2025 holiday period.
"Over the past few days, I've used this calculation to confirm that this year's holiday season will see more moviegoers. Personally, I don't think having five films released simultaneously is a disadvantage. More films, more choices, and more audiences will flock to theaters," a representative from Box Office Vietnam commented.
Which Vietnamese film topped the box office during the holiday season?
Among the five Vietnamese films competing at the box office, "Phi Phong: The Blood Demon of the Sacred Forest" directed by Do Quoc Trung has held strong box office momentum, even briefly leading the box office last weekend, despite having been in theaters for two weeks. "Therefore, if this film had maintained its original release schedule, it's not certain the other films would have achieved similar box office results," a representative from Box Office Vietnam commented. According to data, the film starring Kieu Minh Tuan and Diep Bao Ngoc has currently grossed over 178.6 billion VND.
Over the past three days of the weekend, "The Five-Toothed Pig" and "Phi Phong: The Blood Demon of the Sacred Forest" shared the top two positions with a close margin. Including the holiday period, the horror film starring Oc Thanh Van grossed over 85.3 billion VND, accounting for 30.5% of the total box office revenue. To date, this project has reached over 93.2 billion VND and is predicted to soon reach the 100 billion VND mark this week if it maintains its stable performance at the box office.
